As awkward as it can seem, this question pops up into almost every menstruating woman’s mind at a certain moment.
Peeing with a tampon it might not be the most pleasant act to do, but you should know it’s completely safe. It can be uncomfortable, mostly if the string gets soaked and when it comes to wiping, you will mostly have to pat the area because normal wiping will only draw the string back and make you feel uncomfortable.
How come it’s safe? We’ll explain you.
Urine comes out of your urethra, while your period blood comes from your vagina, so it’s two different openings. A regular tampon goes inside your vagina to absorb period blood and it’s not interfering with your urethra in any way. Wearing a tampon won’t stop you from peeing or put you at danger while doing it. While it is possible to have a bladder prolapse (called cystocele), which happens when a tiny bit of your bladder drops or comes into your vagina, this situation can limit the amount of urine that comes out while wearing a tampon. But if you don’t have this problem (which is extremely rare), you can safely pee while wearing a tampon.
How sanitary is it, though?
If you’re thinking about the soaked string of your tampon, forget about it. Urine is typically sterile, so a wet string won’t cause any issues or a UTI. Many women hate the soaked string, though. What we recommend is that you hold the string on the side while peeing in order to keep it dry. Another thing to recommend is that while you’re always going to the bathroom to do your needs, please check on your tampon as well.
It is highly recommended that you change your tampon every 4 to 6 hours maximum, depending on your flow.
If you pee every 3-4 hours, make sure you change your tampon too, but if you pee every hour please don’t change your tampon every time, it will only cause you discomfort and irritation. Also, make sure you are using organic cotton tampons, as most conventional tampons are full of chemicals, bleach and plastic and you do care about your intimate area, don’t you? There are plenty options on the market according to the country you live in, so please do your research on it and switch to organic if you didn’t do it already.
We personally love Enroush because of its ethics, packaging and quality of the products.
Bottom line, YES, ladies, it’s 100% safe to pee with a tampon on, so go on with your day and conquer the world, even if you’re on your period!
